- CAT - Cats were domestic in Egypt from c. 2000 B.C.E., but not a familiar household animal to classical Greeks and Romans. The word appeared in Europe as Latin catta around 75 C.E., Byzantine Greek katta (c. 350), Proto-Germanic kattuz (c. 400-450), and was in general use on the continent by c. 700, replacing Latin feles.
- DOG - Old English docga was a late, rare word used of a powerful breed of canine. It forced out the O.E. word hund(the general Germanic word, like in dachshund) by the 16th century and subsequently was picked up in many continental languages (like French dogue and Danish dogge). But! the origin remains one of the great mysteries of English etymology!!
