The More You Know: Soft-shell turtles are so-called because their carapace doesn't have horny scutes (scales), but instead is leathery and pliable. Varieties live in Africa, Asia, and Southeast Asia, and some were recently discovered in North America!! They can be kept as pets, but they require a ton of equipment. And they are weird looking.
